Preface

We are delighted to welcome you to the fifth edition of Humanitas, the literary journal for the community of the Medical University of South Carolina. Throughout the five years of this publication’s history, we have witnessed the profound relationship between our professional lives and our human experience. This is expressed beautifully in the poems, essays and photographs selected for publication in this edition of Humanitas.

While we received a generous selection of submissions this year, it is striking that those selected seem to revolve around the themes of transformation (which, in some cases may seem somber because they involve the process of death) and introspection
.
Working with the authors was one of the most pleasurable aspects of our tenure as editors. We were privileged to learn of the sentiments behind many of the contributions as we finalized pieces with the creators. Several of these pieces were written for family members (some obvious, some not) while several others were written in consideration of friends undergoing medical ordeals.

Our sincere gratitude goes to the students and faculty involved in the selection process. The job of reading and critiquing would have been impossible without your input.

Thank you to Bert Keller, Carol Lancaster and Kristi Alford, whose efforts and support make this project both possible and fun. Along with the University Humanities Committee, they are the “breath and life” of humanities at MUSC.

Our appreciation also goes to Mr. Clute and Mr. Chaplin who made the realization of this publication feasible.

We appreciate the students, faculty, staff and friends of MUSC. By your submissions, interest and support you keep the compassionate and empathetic aspects of human care thriving on our scientific campus.
