Preface

Welcome to the fourth edition of Humanitas, the literary journal of the Medical University of South Carolina. We are proud to present a collection of fine prose, poetry, photographs and art which represent the artistic talent present at our university. Although MUSC is largely a scientific and academic community , it is clear form the poems, stories and photographs in this edition of Humanitas that the creative spirit is thriving among faculty, students and staff.

We received a formidable number of submissions this year, and deciding which ones would be included in Humanitas was challenging. Submissions were reviewed by members of the University Humanities Committee and students from the Medical Humanities Scholars Program. Curiously, the submissions selected seemed to revolve around a theme: one of growth and transformation, questioning and discovery. The voices and images in this issue are compelling examples of the depth of compassion and understanding of human nature present among our colleagues. Some are somber and others frivolous, but each displays the struggles to find meaning in our circumstances.

This publication would not have been possible without the efforts of the University Humanities Committee, the Medical Humanities Scholars Program, Dr. Bert Keller, Dr. Carol Lancaster and Pat Clute of the University Print Shop.

Our sincere appreciate goes out to Dr. Raymond Greenberg for supporting Humanitas, particularly since this year has been one of transition for him. We are proud to present this edition at the dawn of his presidency.

This project would be impossible were it not for the time and effort provided by Kristi Rogers. She is an outstanding organizer and truly amazing person. We appreciate her help.

Thank you to Bert Keller and Carol Lancaster for their continued guidance and mentoring of Humanitas. They are the breath and life of humanities at MUSC.

And our sincere appreciation to the faculty, staff, students and friends of the Medical University of South Carolina. Without your continued interest and submissions, this journal would be obsolete.

Enjoy!
