PREFACE
|
Preface Genuine care and careful observation have crafted the pieces presented in this journal, the third volume of Humanitas. There are a significant number of people at MUSC who maintain an avocation in the humanities and an even larger number of people who appreciate the meaning of this activity, though this goes largely unnoticed due to the private nature of these pursuits and the demanding schedules of health care. Nonetheless, in a university hospital system it seems natural that there would be an abundance of this tendency. This collection represents the sincerity common to those in the MUSC community. We received an encouraging number of submissions this year making the selection process challenging. Submissions were reviewed by students in the Medical Humanities Scholar's Program and faculty from the University Humanities Committee. In keeping with the continued growth of the journal, we included two new dimensions to this year's volume. Essays have been included to complement poetry and prose, and a dedication has been included to recognize an individual within the MUSC family who has demonstrated compelling activity in the humanities. Dr. Raymond Greenberg provided awards funded by the Health Sciences Foundation to recognize outstanding submissions. Certificates in the amount of $150 were awarded. After initial review, select pieces from each category were given to Dr. Curtis Worthington, Jr for award selection. Congratulations to the following:
Thank you to everyone who generously submitted their work. Thank you to Dr. Raymond Greenberg for financing the publication of Humanitas and for his sustained encouragement. Thank you to Kristi Alford for organizing our progress; to the reviewers for generating consensus; to Mr. Chaplin for realizing the layout; and to Mr. Clute for making our product tangible. Thank you to Dr. Curtis Worthington, Jr for serving as judge in award selection. Thank you to Bert Keller and Carol Lancaster whose friendship and guidance made this project a special experience.
